We will discuss race as a social construct; why and how race is often used in society and the criminal justice system.

This session will explore why race is a significant factor in our cases and the attorney’s and investigator’s need to be cognizant and sensitive to this. We will also look at the statistical reality that a defendant will more than likely be an African born in America or some other minority and explore ways to best serve them.

Topic material will cover:
  • Origin of race in the U. S.
  • How race is used
  • Most likely defendants
  • Barriers to effective communication
  • Preconceptions and Stereotypes
  • Tools to address the issues of race in our practice
