In many legal jurisdictions substance use is a voluntary act that may result in mental impairment that does not mitigate legal consequences for the substance using individual. This session will introduce the ways in which substance use disorder is a brain disease, providing information about the physical and neurobiological effects of different substances on the brain and how these may result in individual impairment. The various ways in which substances can impact an individual and how this information can be used to develop mitigation will be brainstormed during the session.
